Safety diagnosis and audit

BRRC has been monitoring the growing interest in road safety audits and inspections for a number of years. As early as in 2002, the Centre participated in the activities of the European Road Federation (ERF).

On 29th November 2008, directive 2008/96/EG of the European Parliament and the Council of 19th November 2008 on road infrastructure safety management was published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

BRRC as a sectoral operator for CEN/TCs 226 Road equipment, 227 Road materials and 396 Earthworks

Le 20 mars 2007, le conseil d’administration du Bureau de Normalisation (NBN) a reconnu notre centre de recherche en tant qu’opérateur sectoriel pour les comités techniques européens CEN/TC226 Equipements de la route et CEN/TC227 Matériaux routiers.

Fin 2009, le CRR, conjointement avec le CSTC, a été accepté en tant qu’opérateur sectoriel pour le tout nouveau CEN/TC396 Terrassements.

Measurement of the daytime visibility of road markings

The result of this measurement, daytime visibility, is the luminous intensity from a surface unit of sampled road marking, as perceived by a motorist from a distance of 30 m; it is expressed per unit of illumination of the marking under diffuse lighting conditions. Diffuse lighting can be compared to natural lighting under a clouded sky, or street lighting at night. Daytime visibility is expressed in mcd lx-1 m-2. Typical values for the daytime visibility of new white markings range between 100 and 200 mcd lx-1 m-2. On concrete, which is lighter in colour, usually a higher initial value is required than on asphalt, since not only absolute daytime visibility is important, but also the contrast of the marking with the surrounding road surface. The measuring apparatus available at BRRC is a Qd30 instrument of the DELTA company; it is described in more detail in BRRC’s information leaflet F56.


Field performance requirements for road markings

- ait la bonne couleur (blanc ou jaune en Belgique),
- soit visible en toutes circonstances,
- soit suffisamment rugueux pour éviter que l’on ne glisse sur lui (SRT).
